RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. PERFORMANCE

1.1 Tiers, pieces requirements and duration

Tier 1 (School String Orchestra Tier)
Number of musicians Repertoire Performance duration
25 to 35 members with no more than 20% of the group made up of alumni members One compulsory work AND one contrasting standard multi-movement string work

Compulsory work: One movement from the 3 Mozart string  divertismentos

Contrasting standard work: Holst St Paul’s Suite, Britten simple symphony OR similar repertoire (subjected to approval upon submission during application process)

Maximum of 20 minutes 

 

Tier 2 (String Serenade – Advanced String Orchestra Tier)
Number of musicians Repertoire Performance duration
Minimum of 15 members One major complete string work from the Romantic OR 20th Century period (subjected to approval upon submission during application process)

Examples:

Romantic period:

  1. Dvorak String Serenade
  2. Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence
  3. Josef Suk Serenade for Strings

20th Century Period:

  1. Frank Bridge Suite for String Orchestra
  2. Elgar string serenade
  3. Dag Wiren String serenade
  4. John Rutter String suite
  5. Respighi Ancient Airs and Dances suite 3
Maximum of 30 minutes

 

Tier 3 (Full Orchestra Tier)
Number of musicians Repertoire Performance duration
Dependent on repertoire requirements Two compulsory work from a full orchestra work AND one compulsory Rossini overture (subjected to approval during application process)

Examples

Classical:

Symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Dvorak, Mendelssohn etc.

Maximum of 30 minutes 

 

Each group may participate in ONE TIER.

In compliance with Intellectual Property law, specifically copyright, groups should not make any modifications to the repertoire pieces (including changing of key, rearrangements, truncating, etc.).

In preparation for the GSF, participating groups are encouraged to focus on the quality of players’, musical learning processes and experiences.

Each orchestra is to observe the number of participants for each tier.

2. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

2.1 All groups are to bring their own instruments for practice and the actual performance. Instruments WILL NOT be provided. Special arrangements and rental requests need to be requested from organisers in advance.

2.2 All participating schools must comply with the Rules and Regulations.

2.3 Unauthorised photography, video- and/or audio-recording are not allowed during all GSF performances

2.4 No food or drinks may be brought into the rehearsal venues and performance halls.

2.5 By registering for the GSF all groups are deemed to have consented to publish their repertoire titles for publicity purposes.

2.6 By participating in the GSF, all groups are deemed to have consented to the video recording of their set-piece performances and photography of their performances by the Global Strings Federation for archival and publicity purposes.

2.7 News/Announcement/Updates on GYO will be sent to the groups’ contact person
